Holidays begin
at Hanby House
Hanby House in Westerville will launch the holiday season Dec. 1, 5 and 6 with a series of musical events, complete with decorations and refreshments.

Hanby House, once a stop on the Underground Railroad, was named for its mid-1800s occupants, the Hanby family.

William Hanby was a founder of Otterbein College.

A son, Benjamin Hanby, was a composer whose works include "Who Is He in Yonder Stall?" and "Up on the Housetop."
  •  The vocal quartet, M.E.E.K., will sing those songs, among others, from 7 to 9 p.m., on Tuesday, Dec. 1.
  • A father-daughter duo, Dennis and Lily Davenport, will play piano and recorder and Amy Gale will play the harp from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5.
  • Cellist Katie Maskell and strings players Pat Clous and LaShell Daniels will entertain from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 6.

Hot apple cider and ginger cookies will be served. Available for purchase are mini fruitcakes made from a Civil War-era recipe.

Also for sale are copies of Ben Hanby's songs, maps of the Ohio portion of the Underground Railroad, and a Hanby family biography, "Choose You This Day," by Dacia Custer Shoemaker, Hanby House's first curator. A video highlighting the Hanby story can be viewed in Shoemaker Cottage, located behind Hanby House.

General admission is $2; children ages 6 to 12 pay 75 cents. Members of AAA receive a discount, and Hanby Club and Ohio Historical Society members are admitted for free.

Hanby House is at 160 W. Main St. in Westerville.

Curtain Players slate
'Little House' play
Curtain Players will present "A Little House Christmas" for a three-weekend run beginning Friday, Nov. 27, at its Harlem Road theater.

Based on the popular "Little House" series of books by Laura Ingalls Wilder, this stage production is set in the Ingalls home on Christmas Eve. Pa and Ma Ingalls involve their daughters Laura and Mary in planning a dinner and square dance to celebrate Christmas with family and neighbors.

While a storm threatens their holiday joy, Mary and Laura learn the true meaning of friendship in this inspirational and uplifting story.

Additionally, Curtain Players has forged a new partnership with Westerville Area Resource Ministry for a holiday food drive.

In the spirit of the story told on stage, those attending "A Little House Christmas" performances are being asked to contribute five non-perishable food items and household goods or a bag of groceries.

Goods collected will be delivered to WARM for distribution in their food pantry during the holiday season.

Cash donations, too, will be accepted at the theatre.

"A Little House Christmas" will be staged at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays Nov. 27-28 and Dec. 4-5 and 11-12 and 2 p.m. Sundays Dec. 6 and 13.

Tickets are $14, $12 for senior citizens and students.

Tickets may be reserved on line at www.curtainplayers.com.
