Wellington's Leonardo Pedicelli (center) chases after the ball last Saturday as Tree of Life's Nathan Durbin (left) and Derek York close in. The Jaguars won 7-0.
For the first time in its history, the Wellington School boys golf team advanced to the state tournament in consecutive seasons.

The Jaguars shot a 318 to win the district title and return to the state tournament, finishing ahead of state qualifiers Sugarcreek Garaway (318), Strausburg (323) and Columbus Academy (328) on Oct. 6 at Cumberland Trail Golf Course.

Wellington plays Friday and Saturday at Ohio State's Scarlet Course. Garaway team that won the 2007 and 2008 state titles.

"Last year, Sam Maier's performance got us to the state tournament," said Josh Taylor, who shot a 76 for fourth overall. "This year it was more of a team effort."

Chris King (78), Jon Taylor (81), Jon Miller (83) and Nick Mayne (83) all had solid rounds.

A year ago, Maier, a 2009 graduate, shot a 69 to help Wellington take the district championship. The Jaguars finished seventh with a 672 at the state tournament, which was held at The Player's Club at Fox Fire, behind Garaway (631).

Coach Craig Mosier said the Jaguars are familiar with the Scarlet course.

"Everyone has played there," Mosier said. "It is a very difficult course. The No. 4 is a particularly difficult par-five with a lot of water hazards surrounding it. There are no gimmes out there."

Seniors Josh Taylor and King are the only two golfers on who have been to the state before. Taylor shot an 83 on the first day and 81 on the second for 164, the second best on the team. King had a 98 and an 88 to finish with a 186.

•The boys soccer team couldn't have asked for a better way to go into the tournament.

Wellington closes the regular season at Village Academy today and then faces the winner of the Griffons-Madison Plains game on Oct. 24 in the first round of the Division III tournament.

"Village Academy is most likely the team we will see in the first round of the tournament," coach Brian Galvin said. "So that's a great way to end the season."

The Jaguars, who were seeded 10th, needed to defeat Jonathan Alder last Tuesday and Village Academy to secure the team's first winning record since it went 10-6-3 in 1999.

Wellington defeated Tree of Life 7-0 last Saturday with forward Jeremy Guinn scoring four goals. With the victory, Wellington improves to 6-5-2 overall.

•Freshman Annie Miller, the lone Wellington qualifier, finished fifth with an 84 at the Division II district girls golf tournament Oct. 8 at the Upper Landsdown tournament, and didn't advance to the state tournament.

"She'll be back," coach John Yakscoe said. "She had a couple of bad holes. She knew the course, but she just didn't play it well."

As a team, the Jaguars placed third (459) at the Mill Creek sectional tournament Sept. 30, behind disqualifiers Columbus School for Girls (398) and Granville (451).

•The girls tennis team will have three representatives at the Division II district tournament Friday and Saturday at Columbus School for Girls.

Senior Nisha Crouser, a two-time state qualifier in singles, placed third in singles. After losing to Hartley's Rachel Morales, 6-3, 6-3 in the semifinals, Crouser defeated Hilliard Bradley's Ashley Thai 6-1, 1-0 in the consolation finals. Thai retired after rolling her ankle early in the second set.

Nisha's sister, Sejal Crouser, and Rashma Sharoff, placed second in doubles, losing to Bexley's Corrine Rauck and Maddie Morton 6-0, 6-0 in the final. Rauck and Morton placed third in the state tournament last year.

"It's kind of nice Nisha gets to share the district tournament with her sister," said coach Klint McEnery, whose team faced Columbus Academy in a OTCA Division II district final last Tuesday.

Nisha Crouser will face Worthington Christian's Caroline Prior, the Columbus School for Girls sectional runner-up, and Sejal Crouser and Sharoff will play to Academy's Sri Kundur and Parul Reddy, the CSG sectional third-place finisher, in the first round.

The top two finishers in singles and doubles advance to the state tournament, held Friday and Saturday at Ohio State's Stickney Center. The district had three qualifiers last year and four in 2007.

"Having only two qualifiers definitely adds another element to the district," McEnery said. "You're always going to have to beat someone good to get out of the district but this year it's going to be that much tougher."

Also participating in the tournament were Jacquelyn Pfeiffer, Sitara Koneru and the doubles team of Meleah Moore and Allison Smith. Pfeiffer lost to Lauren Thai, the top-seed, 6-0, 6-0 and Moore and Smith lost to Rauck and Morton 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals. Koneru lost to Ashley Thai 6-0, 6-1 in the second round of the tournament.
