Aaron Frim of the Wellington School has been named the 2009 High School Chemistry Teacher of the Year by the Columbus Section of the American Chemical Society.

Frim was to receive the award at the society's Oct. 20 meeting.

Frim's application essay highlighted his work with sophomores on nanotechnology. Frim has consulted with the Ohio State University's Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center for the past four years.

"What I'm doing in my classroom and sharing at OSU is how to talk about nanotechnology -- not as its own unit, but as part of existing high school chemistry lessons," Frim said. "I'm trying to take nanotechnology out of the realm of science fiction for my students, and show them how it is real in our everyday lives.

"For example, you can talk about the difference between regular drugstore sunscreen, which has limited efficacy. Compare that against the zinc oxide sunscreen you see on lifeguards, which is more effective but you can see it. The place for nanotechnology is to make those effective sunscreen particles so small that you can't see them."
