An investigation by the Upper Arlington Police Division led to the conviction of a local resident and a Columbus man on mortgage fraud.

Prosecutors said Larry Corna of Upper Arlington and Alan Csipke of Columbus conspired to obtain inflated mortgages on properties in two counties in order to obtain money from loans under false pretenses.

Corna of 2575 Welsford Road in Upper Arlington and Csipke of 964 Sells Ave. in Northwest Columbus entered guilty pleas in Franklin County Common Pleas Court.

Corna was sentenced on Oct. 22 to four years and 11 months in prison after pleading guilty to a felony racketeering charge.

Csipke pleaded guilty in January of falsification and money-laundering charges. Csipke was fined $500 and placed on probation for three years.

The fraud involved three properties in Franklin County, including two in Upper Arlington, and one in Ottawa County.

"We originally started investigating in the early part of 2006. Earlier that year, we took the case to the Franklin County grand jury," said Detective Jeffrey Conrad of the UAPD. "From the publicity from that, we received numerous informational leads that led to a second indicted case in 2007."

Conrad and UAPD Officer Jason Priest, the department's computer forensics expert, worked in conjunction with the Central Ohio Mortgage Fraud Task Force.

"It's a task force that was set up through the Ohio Attorney General's Office," Conrad said. "It involved Columbus police, (the U.S. Department of) Housing and Urban Development, and the Franklin County prosecutor's office."

The UAPD was the only suburban police district involved in the task force for the Corna and Csipke investigation.
