Ohio voters Tuesday nixed an out-of-state casino operator's plans to build a $600-million casino.
Issue 6, a constitutional amendment that would have allowed for a privately owned casino in Clinton County, was rejected by 2,532,978 no votes to 1,503,250 yes votes, or 62.76 percent to 37.24 percent, with 76.63 percent of precincts reporting early Wednesday morning, according to unofficial results on the Ohio Secretary of State's Web site. Voters approved Issue 5, upholding legislation passed earlier this year to limit the amount of interest on payday loans. With 79.58 percent of precincts reporting early Wednesday morning, 2,502,071 Ohioans, or 64.08 percent of voters, voted to keep the legislation, while 1,402,757, or 35.92 percent, voted to overturn it, according to unofficial results. The vote will uphold the law and cap the interest rates on payday loans to 28 percent and limit loans to $500. Borrowers will be given at least 30 days to repay a loan, the ballot language says. Voters did pass Issue 1, which will amend the state's constitution to create earlier petition-filing deadlines for statewide ballot issues. According to unofficial results, the amendment passed with 2,489,550 votes, or 68.86 percent, to 1,125,827, or 31.14 percent, with 77.08 percent of precincts reporting. Issue 2, a constitutional amendment authorizing the state to issue $200-million in bonds to continue its compliance with the Clean Ohio program, also passed. Issue 2 earned 2,669,948 yes votes, or 69.1 percent of votes, to 1,194,168 no votes, or 30.9 percent, with 79.58 percent of precincts reporting. Issue 3, an amendment to change the constitution to give clear rights to property owners of any water flowing under, or located on or adjoining their property, passed with 2,725,762 votes, or 72.13 percent, to 1,053,296 votes, or 27.87 percent, with 80.56 percent of precincts reporting. Issue 4 was removed from the ballot. Story toolsToday’s Top Stories
