The Cougars' Allyson George finished fifth in the 100 meters April 11 at Pickerington North.
The Westland High School baseball and softball teams have had a rivalry with Central Crossing,
and now the two South-Western schools have added incentive.
The teams will collide in both sports Monday in OCC-Central Division play at Westland. The teams will meet again May 6 at Central Crossing in the regular-season finale. The baseball team stood at 3-3 overall and 0-2 in the OCC before playing Hilliard Darby last Thursday. The Cougars hadn't played since a 6-0 loss to Hilliard Davidson on April 9, as three games were postponed. Before last Thursday, Westland had seven games postponed this season. "It's frustrating, but you live with it," coach Dave Daniels said. "It's Ohio, everybody understands. Everyone else is the same boat." Central Crossing was 2-2 and 0-2 before playing Wellington last Thursday. "We always like playing those guys," Daniels said. "We like playing Grove City and (Franklin) Heights. All those district schools. We always manage to try and play the West side teams. Central Crossing is a good club, just like everyone else in our league." The Cougars will play host to Thomas Worthington on Tuesday and Davidson on Wednesday and will visit Dublin Coffman on Friday. The softball team was 4-2 overall and 1-1 in the division before its game against Darby last Thursday. Central Crossing was 7-1 and 3-0 before playing Upper Arlington the same day. "We have a South-Western rivalry with Central Crossing," coach Mike North said. "They've always had a good program. That's going to be good for us." Westland will play host to Thomas on Tuesday and Davidson on Wednesday and will visit Coffman on Friday. The Cougars are hoping to avenge a 1-0 loss to Davidson on April 9. Erika Reese fired a one-hitter for the win, as the Wildcats scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning. That was the last game the Cougars had played before last Thursday. "It's probably more frustrating for the kids," North said of the postponed games. "They sit in school all day ready to play and then they have to go in the gym and practice." •Weather was also playing havoc with the boys tennis team, as the Cougars were 1-4 overall before a non-league match against Columbus West. Westland is 0-2 in the OCC. Matches against Worthington Kilbourne last Tuesday and Groveport last Wednesday were postponed. Westland will visit Franklin Heights on Monday and host Thomas on Tuesday and Upper Arlington on Thursday. "We like to play the South-Western schools," coach Dan Witteman said of the Falcons. "That should be a good match. I want to compete with every team. I don't pick out teams and say we're going to compete with this team. We're going to compete with every team. We're going to play tennis against every team." •The track and field teams will visit Kilbourne on Tuesday and participate in the Africentric Invitational on Friday. "That was my favorite meet of the year," coach Tim Eckard said of last season's Africentric Invitational. "We were treated with respect. It was a great meet. It was a comfortable, very informal kind of feel. Our girls won that meet last year. It's a great meet." The boys team didn't score in the 15-team Stingel Invitational at Pickerington North on April 11 as Centerville won with 116 points. The girls squad took 13th (7.5) also behind first-place Centerville (93). Allyson George took fifth in the 100 meters (13.1) and Allison Thomas was fifth in the high jump (4 feet, 10 inches). The boys team fell to Coffman 84-28 and Franklin Heights 42-28 and the girls lost to Coffman 83-16 and Franklin Heights 58-16 in a tri-meet last Tuesday at Westland. Eckard is hoping that standout sprinter Kemekea Washington will return on Friday after missing action with a hamstring injury. Story toolsToday’s Top Stories
