The Westland High School baseball team was looking for a spark as it entered its game against
Whetstone last Monday in the first round of the Division I district tournament.
The Cougars appeared headed to a victory, but the host Braves rallied for a 6-5 victory. They were 7-16 overall and 0-13 in the OCC-Central Division with a regular season game remaining with Central Crossing. Whetstone played fourth-seeded Dublin Scioto in the second round last Thursday. Westland scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings and three in the sixth to build a 5-0 lead. But Whetstone rallied with six runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull out the win. Jose Reyes took the loss in relief of Lucas Pencek. "We scratched out five runs, but we still never really hit the ball as well as we should be hitting," coach David Daniels said. "That's been our bugaboo all year, but they made a couple errors and we got a couple timely hits, advanced runners and scratched out a 5-0 lead." The Cougars entered the tournament coming off losses to Worthington Kilbourne 1-0 on May 7 and Upper Arlington 6-5 on May 9. Thomas Worthington beat Westland 12-1 in six innings May 8. Chad Helsel led the team in hitting before last Thursday at .375 followed by Reyes (.295) and Sean Clutter (.276). Reyes had a team-leading three home runs and 14 RBI. Pencek was 2-0 with a 1.57 ERA and 19 strikeouts. •The 12th-seeded softball was upset by visiting Watterson 4-3 last Monday in the first round of the Division I district tournament. The Cougars scored twice in the sixth inning to pull within 4-3 and had the tying run on base. Brandi Rees was the losing pitcher. "It was a very tough loss to handle," senior Kelsey Kincaide said. Westland was 11-10 overall and 6-7 in the OCC-Central with regular season games remaining with Central Crossing and non-league DeSales. "Everybody is playing hard," coach Mike North said. "There isn't any giving up on this team. We'll finish up strong." "This year was about not giving up, doing all that we could do and really showing people that we're different than what they expected us to be," Kincaide said. "For once, we want people to look at Westland softball and think wow they really did something this year." The Cougars defeated Dublin Coffman 4-1 on May 7 and lost to UA 8-3 on May 8 and 4-1 on May 9 and Thomas 2-1 last Tuesday. "Thomas is a good team and they gave us a battle," North said. "Obviously, they won the game, but we had our shots in that game. We had a runner at third in the seventh inning, but couldn't get her in." •The boys and girls track and field teams, which competed in the OCC-Central Division Championships last Thursday and Saturday at UA, will compete in the Division I district 1 meet at Coffman on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. The top four in each event will advance to the regional at Pickerington North. Coach Tim Eckard expected Randy Hall in the shot put and Allyson George in the sprints to have the best chance on his teams to advance. "We'd like to get as many as possible to regional, that's always our goal," Eckard said. "We're more on the thin side this year. We have some people that will be contending for those positions." The boys team was 11th (8 points) behind first-place Dublin Jerome (100) at the Viking Invitational at Teays Valley on May 9. The girls was 10th (10.5) behind first-place Watkins Memorial (83). "The kids are still practicing hard," Eckard said. "We're starting to scale down and not work them too hard, but they're still showing up on time to practice, doing what we ask them to do, which is all as a coach you can hope for at this point in the game." •The boys tennis team, which competed in the Division I sectional last Friday and Saturday at Hilliard Darby, will close the regular season with matches against Briggs on Monday and Grove City on Tuesday. The top four in singles and doubles from the sectional will advance to district Friday and Saturday at Hilliard Davidson. The Cougars are 6-10 overall and 0-6 in the OCC-Central. They finished seventh (11) at the OCC-Central tournament May 9 at Davidson behind first-place Upper Arlington (73) and ahead of Central Crossing (7). "Everybody played well," coach Dan Witteman said. "They all lost in the first round and then they came back and beat Central Crossing teams in the second round. We were able to finish above Central Crossing. They had beaten us during the season (3-2 on May 5). It kept us one spot above them. I told the guys that was good, it was an accomplishment." Westland defeated Canal Winchester 5-0 last Monday and Ready 5-0 last Tuesday. "Ready was a very young team. They're all freshmen, but still a win is a win," Witteman said. Against Canal Winchester, winners were David Griffith at first singles 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, Allan Hinch at second singles 6-0, 6-1, Andy Van at third singles 6-3, 6-0, Eleazar Collins and Troy Fleischman at first doubles 6-2, 6-4 and Colin McCarty and Scott Haslam at second doubles by default. Against Ready, winners were Griffith at first singles 6-1, 6-1, Hinch at second singles 6-1, 6-0, Van at third singles 6-2, 6-2, Collins and Fleischman at first doubles 6-4, 6-2 and Haslam and Jesse Kraft at second doubles 6-2, 6-2.
