Remodel your resume at the library
Wednesday, November 18, 2009 1:46 PM
Jeff Regensburger is an adult services lead librarian for Worthington Libraries.
The library is full of books on resume writing -- literally, there are hundreds on the subject -- but they can never give you the same kind of personal help that you'd get from expert presenters and one-on-one coaching. For this level of assistance, you need Worthington Libraries and our two-part "Resume Remodel" workshop. Your resume is often your first point of contact with a prospective employer, so getting it right is critical, especially in today's economy. Given current unemployment figures, it's not uncommon for a single job listing to attract hundreds of resumes. Making sure yours stands out has as much to do with good writing as it does qualifications and experience. A well-designed resume will demonstrate your professionalism, highlight your accomplishments and -- if you make it clear you've got what employers are looking for -- get you an interview. During the first session of "Resume Remodel," Jeff Robek, a career adviser in the Ohio State University Career Exploration Office, will explain what goes into the perfect resume. The workshop will provide an expert overview of the best practices in resume writing, from highlighting accomplishments (rather than tasks), to quantifying your results. Anyone interested in learning the basics of resume writing will benefit from this program. "Resume Remodel: Part One" will be offered at Old Worthington Library, 820 High St., on Dec. 8 and at Northwest Library, 2280 Hard Road, on Feb. 9. Both sessions start at 11 a.m. During the second session of "Resume Remodel," you'll meet with one of the library's expert reviewers for a 20-minute, one-on-one resume evaluation. These experts are human resources department personnel, career advisers and recruiters, which means they know exactly what employers are looking for. It always helps to get a second opinion on your resume, and that's even truer when the second opinion comes from an expert in the field. "Resume Remodel: Part Two" is planned at Old Worthington Library on Dec. 15 and at Northwest Library on Feb. 16. Both sessions start at 11 a.m. Registration, required for all workshop sessions, starts Dec. 1. You can register by calling (614) 807-2626 or stopping in at any Worthington Libraries location. Job seekers will certainly want to take advantage of this great opportunity, so mark your calendars and make sure to register. Jeff Regensburger Story toolsToday’s Top Stories
