• U.S. Air Force Airmen 1st Class Grayson Bryan, Karen McCoy, Aneesa Smith and Alexandria Thomas recently graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland in San Antonio, Texas.
Bryan, the son of Lauri Schirtzinger of Kirkersville, is a 2016 Watkins Memorial High School graduate.
McCoy, the daughter of Brenda and Thomas McCoy of Reynoldsburg, also is a 2016 Watkins Memorial graduate.
Smith is the daughter of Steven Smith of Lancaster and Debbie Masters of Newark. She is a 2015 Newark High School graduate.
Thomas, daughter of Angelia and Douglas Heinrich of Blacklick, graduated from Licking Heights High School in 2016.
The airman completed an intensive eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness and basic warfare principles and skills. Airmen who complete basic training earn four credits toward an associate’s degree in applied science through the Community College of the Air Force.
• U.S. Army Pvts. Andrew Johnson and Christopher Miller recently graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.
Johnson, son of Nicholas Johnson of Utica, graduated from Utica High School in 2016.
Miller, son of Anthony and Melissa Miller of Blacklick, is a 2012 Licking Heights High School graduate.
During nine weeks of training, they studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values. They also received instruction and practice in physical fitness, rifle marksmanship and bayonet use, chemical warfare, unarmed combat, drill and ceremony, marching, map reading, military courtesy, basic first aid, field tactics and the military justice system.
