A Columbus Division of Police officer shot and killed a man who would not drop a BB gun Thursday, April 6, in the parking lot of Mount Carmel St. Ann’s hospital in Westerville.

According to the Twitter account for Columbus police, the incident began in Columbus with a medical-transport request at 1:03 p.m. on the 6700 block of Garden Terrace Road.

The officer involved in the shooting went to St. Ann’s with the medical transport because the man reportedly was experiencing "psychological issues."

After the man was transported to the hospital, he saw the officer and pulled what was believed to be a gun from his bag, according to the tweet from Columbus police.

He refused several commands from the officer to get on the ground and refused to drop the gun. The officer shot him when he did not comply, the tweet said.

The man died at the hospital just before 2 p.m.

The gun later was determined to be a BB gun, according to the tweet.
