The Westerville Garden Club is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the club's largest annual fundraiser and surrounding the event with a variety of other activities.
The group's plant sale has been its main fundraiser since the group formed in the 1940s. The sale raises money that is used to put on the free Westerflora garden tour, maintain flower beds at Westerville's First Responders' Memorial and Hanby House and to support garden therapy with seniors.
Linda Laine, the group's spokeswoman, said even she had no idea how many activities the club was involved in until she joined.
"I don't think people realize at all," she said. "When I started helping, I thought, 'I didn't realize they did all this.' "
To commemorate its anniversary, the club will be installing a Blue Star Memorial marker – an armed services tribute – at Hanby Park, along with landscaping around the marker.
Local businesses buoy the sale by donating items for a raffle.
Tickets are $1 apiece or $5 for six, and each item is valued over $100.
This year's sale runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 13 on the front lawn of the Masonic Lodge, 130 S. State St.
