An Oxford Township man faces misdemeanor charges after he entered the Olentangy River earlier this month on the city's east side and refused to leave, according to Delaware police reports.

Officers responded about 1 p.m. July 9 to reports that a man entered the river behind a business in the 100 block of East Central Avenue and would not accept offers of help.

Emergency workers eventually rescued the man near the East William Street bridge and transported him to Grady Memorial Hospital for a mental-health evaluation, according to police reports. Officers later arrested the 44-year-old man on charges of inducing panic, a first-degree misdemeanor, and disorderly conduct, a minor misdemeanor, reports said.

Investigators believe drugs played a role in the incident, according to police reports.
