Did you know it's National Ice Cream Month?

For ThisWeek's second visit to a central Ohio ice-cream shop in celebration of National Ice Cream Month, our staff members stopped by Simply Rolled Ice Cream, 970 N. High St. in Columbus's Short North, on a rainy July 13.

You could say it brightened our day.

Simply Rolled Ice Cream is inspired by the Asian tradition of mixing ice cream and toppings onto frozen metal slab, then rolling up the concoction into four or five curls for the final presentation, according to owner Shannon Sano.

The shop, which is inside Oats & Barley Market, opened May 13. The menu has traditional selections like Oreo – the most popular item, according to Sano – and peanut-butter varieties, but also harder-to-find flavors like matcha and coconut ash (which looks like black ice cream).

The process for making the ice cream has inspired many videos on social media, and the "ice-cream artists" who work there are ready for customers who want to film, Sano said.

Simply Rolled Ice Cream is open daily from noon to 10 p.m.
