Two Olentangy Liberty High School students were killed in a car crash earlier today, July 17, in Berlin Township.
The Delaware County Sheriff's Office, Ohio State Highway Patrol and other local safety agencies responded shortly before 11:15 a.m. to the report of a crash on Africa Road near its intersection with Summerwood Crossing in Berlin Township.
According to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Gavin D. Schlotterbeck, 17, of Powell was driving a Toyota Camry northbound on Africa Road when he left the east side of the road, overcorrected and crossed into the southbound lane. A southbound Jeep Wrangler driven by a 19-year-old woman struck the passenger's side of the Camry, according to the release.
Officials pronounced Schlotterbeck and his passenger, Hunter D. McClelland, 17, of Powell, dead at the scene, according to the highway patrol.
In a statement, Olentangy Superintendent Mark Raiff confirmed Schlotterbeck and McClelland were students at Liberty High School.
"We are deeply saddened by the tragic news of the passing of two of our Liberty High School students this morning," he said. "In the coming days we will do everything possible to support our students and families."
The driver of the Wrangler and her 12-year-old passenger were taken to area hospitals for treatment of injuries that were not life-threatening.
Officials closed Africa Road between Cheshire and Plumb roads following the crash. The road reopened shortly before 3:30 p.m.
