The original Max & Erma’s, a German Village tradition for 45 years, is closing its doors.

The neighborhood spot, which eventually grew into a chain of restaurants, will bid farewell to customers Aug. 6.

Glacier Restaurant Group, which owns Max & Erma’s and a number of other restaurant concepts, sold the building at 739 S. Third St. for an undisclosed price.

“The reality is that the building didn’t meet our standards,” said James Blystone, vice president of real estate and communications for Glacier, based in Whitefish, Montana.

Blystone said the new owner is 739 Third Street LLC but would not divulge any other details.

There are no plans to close the other Columbus locations, he said.

“We will absolutely miss the German Village community (and) are grateful for the wonderful employees who passionately served our guests and our incredible customers who have continuously supported us over the years,” Blystone said in a prepared statement. “While this is a goodbye to our German Village location, the Max & Erma’s brand and other locations are not going anywhere, and the heritage of the German Village Max & Erma’s will be visible and alive at other locations.”
