Leading up to the start of the 2017-18 school year, the community will have several opportunities to meet face to face with new Bexley City School District Superintendent Kimberly Miller.

On Miller's first official day with the district Aug. 1, she was scheduled to host a meet- and-greet at Graeter's Ice Cream, 2282 E. Main St.

Community members who missed that session can meet Miller, ask questions and voice any concerns they may have with the district at the remaining events set for 9 a.m. Aug. 10 at Starbucks, 2450 E. Main St.; 6 p.m. Aug. 15 at Johnson's Real Ice Cream, 2728 E. Main St.; and 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at Jeni's Splendid Ice Creams, 2156 E. Main St.

Miller also is scheduled to take part in the board of education's monthly meeting at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Cassingham complex, 326 S. Cassingham Road.

Board members chose Miller, who has served as the chief academic officer with the Dublin City Schools for the past three years, as the district's leader after reviewing 38 applications and interviewing six candidates in public meetings in March. Miller replaces Michael Johnson, who announced last fall he would leave the district in July after 16 years.

Miller used vacation time from her previous position to spend the past couple of weeks meeting with Bexley administrators and teachers and learning more about the district, said Melissa Lacroix, school board president. The community meet-and-greet events are designed to build relationships between Miller and families, Lacroix said.

"Her major goal initially is to listen and learn from what are our traditions and what we hold dear and to look at our habits and see what our habits are, and from there figure out what (things) are in the best interests of our children moving forward," she said. "Everything with her is student-centered."

Bexley students are scheduled to return to class Aug. 16.

In addition to the meet-and-greets with the new superintendent, other back-to-school activities include an orientation for the district's new teachers Aug. 11.

Bexley High School will hold freshman orientation from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 10 in the Schottenstein Theater. Incoming freshmen will learn where classes are located, complete vision and hearing screenings and learn about various activities and clubs available.

Bexley Middle School will provide schedules and take pictures of students from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 10 and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 11.

New Family Night sessions also will be held Aug. 10, at 6 p.m. at Montrose Elementary School and 6:30 p.m. at Cassingham Elementary School.

The tradition in which the Bexley Education Foundation provides coffee to parents and greets students as they arrive for the first day of school at Cassingham, Maryland and Montrose elementary schools will continue as foundation staff and board members serve from 8 to 9 a.m. Aug. 16.
