Whitehall police arrested a 24-year-old Mount Vernon man July 18 for felony possession of heroin and tampering with evidence after responding to a report of shoplifting at Wal-Mart, 3657 E. Main St.

Security officers at the store told police the man returned merchandise he had not purchased. The officers detained him until police arrived.

The store filed charges of theft and criminal trespassing against the man, who also had warrants for his arrest from the Heath Police Department.

After meeting in Licking County to exchange custody of the man, Whitehall police learned officers at the store found 0.7 gram of heroin and 15.3 grams of methamphetamines that had been in the possession of the suspect.

A customer found the drugs on the floor and surveillance video showed it falling from the man's clothing as he was being taken into custody, according to reports.

Police impounded the vehicle the man drove to the store. A passenger with the man was released from the scene.

The vehicle's license plate did not match the vehicle to which it was registered, but police found the properly registered license plates inside the vehicle.

Police also found drugs inside the vehicle and issued a warrant for the man who had been a passenger in the vehicle.
