A Gahanna Fan Day with the Columbus Crew Soccer Club, sponsored in conjunction with the Gahanna-Jefferson Education Foundation, will be held Sunday, Sept. 10, at Mapfre Stadium, 1 Black and Golf Blvd. in Columbus.
"We have had a great tradition of strong soccer programs here and are very excited to see three of our own GLHS (Gahanna Lincoln High School) grads on the professional field," said Tricia Twigg, Gahanna community relations outreach coordinator.
Those graduates include the Crew's Wil Trapp and Alex Crognale and Sporting Kansas City's Saad Abdul-Salaam.
The Crew and Sporting Kansas City will face off at 1 p.m. Sept. 10.
Trapp was a junior during the Lions' Division 1 State Championship 2009 title run and Adbul-Salaam was a senior.
Crognale is a 2012 Gahanna graduate and was signed as a homegrown player in December 2016.
Crognale will sign postmatch autographs, Twigg said.
In conjunction with the Columbus Get a Kick Out of Reading Program, children received a ticket to the game and a voucher for autographs.
Twigg said the Gahanna Fan Day event was created out of a partnership with the Columbus Crew.
"They are a great supporter of our fundraiser, the Gahanna Gala," she said.
The first 200 people to purchase Gahanna Community tickets will be able to participate in the supporters' tunnel.
The tailgate starts at 11 a.m. and includes sign-making and games.
Groups of 20 and more will get to take photos on the field level before the match.
"Columbus Crew (Soccer Club) is looking forward to hosting friends and family of the Gahanna community as Crew SC players Wil Trapp, Alex Crognale and Sporting Kansas City's Saad Abdul-Salaam face off," said Tim Miller, communications director for the Columbus Crew. "We look forward to a memorable day at the country's first soccer-specific stadium and a nationally televised match."
