Hilliard police reported the driver of a vehicle was transported to an area hospital after apparently losing control of an SUV while driving southbound on Interstate 270 shortly after 3 p.m. Oct. 20 and crashing into a retention pond.

A passenger in the vehicle did not require transportation to a hospital, police said.

The driver was traveling south on Interstate 270, south of Cemetery Road and north of Roberts Road, when the vehicle left the roadway on the west side of the freeway and into the retention pond, said Andrea Litchfield, a spokeswoman for the Hilliard Division of Police.

Police are investigating whether the driver sustained a medical emergency immediately prior to the accident.

The right lane of I-270 South was closed while first responders worked at the scene but soon reopened, Litchfield said.

Columbus and Washington and Norwich townships responded to the scene.

Norwich Township medics extracted the driver from the pond at 3660 Parkway Lane, said township Fire Chief Jeff Warren.
