St. Charles Preparatory School seniors Jarrod Hay and Ian Noonan of Galloway were named National Merit commended scholars for 2017-18 for placing among the top 5 percent among students who took the Pre-Scholastic Aptitude/National Merit Qualifying Test in their junior year.
Hay, son of Laura Hay, attended Cypress Christian School and is a member of St. Cecilia parish. He earned a black belt in tae kwon do and is an instructor at his tae kwon do school.
Hay is also a teen leader for his parish group, plays alto saxophone for the Saint Charles jazz band and participated in his youth group's service trip to Guatemala.
Noonan, son of Michael and Teresa Noonan, attended St. Cecilia School and is a member of St. Cecilia parish.
He has wrestled for the St. Charles wrestling team and has participated in Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling for a club team. He was a member of the school's cross-country team; jazz band and concert band; the Borromean Chapter of the National Honor Society; and performed as the Charlie Cardinal mascot.
Noonan volunteered as a tutor with International Samaritan, Gospel Road and Buddy Ball, which helps people with special needs play baseball.
Though commended scholars will not continue in competition for National Merit scholarships, some are eligible for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
