Holiday season is in full swing, and Southwest Public Libraries will host a variety of seasonal programs and activities to keep patrons busy as we close out the year.
A favorite from last year returns as Signs of Christmas will perform two shows Dec. 9 for Southwest Public Libraries. The music group will be at Grove City Library at 10 a.m. and at Westland Area Library at 2 p.m.
Signs of Christmas spreads holiday spirit while promoting awareness of deafness and issues for the hard-of-hearing. The group performs holiday carols using American Sign Language. If you have never attended one of the group's concerts, it is a visually exhilarating experience and unlike any other holiday show you've ever seen.
Children and adults also will have the opportunity to make their own holiday crafts at both libraries. At 7 p.m. Dec. 6, Grove City Reference and Adult Services staff will host "Holiday Transformation: From Book to Tree." Using old paperback books, patrons will fold and shape these old pages into hand-crafted holiday trees. This program requires registration by Nov. 29, so call 614-875-6716, ext. 503, or stop by the reference desk.
Over at Westland, the staff will provide supplies and instruction to make ornaments out of Scrabble tiles. "Christmas Craft: Scrabble Tile Ornament" will be held at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 4. Registration is required. Call 614-878-1301, ext. 603, or stop by the reference desk.
Grove City Library will hold an Elf Workshop from 2:30 to 3 p.m. Dec. 9. Children ages 4-12 are invited to find out if they have what it takes to be one of Santa's elves. There will be snacks, crafts and other activities in the Large Meeting Room. At Westland, children ages 8 and up, with a parent, can make ornaments out of Mason jar lids at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 13.
As for the Jolly Old Elf himself, he will be at Grove City Library from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Dec. 9, in Harper's Grove to read "'Twas the Night Before Christmas." Children can have their pictures taken with Santa. A donation for each picture will benefit Nationwide Children's Hospital, sponsored by TWIG 184.
Santa will visit Westland Area Library at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 12. Please bring your camera to take pictures. No registration is required.
Grove City Library also will offer these programs: "Make and Take Ornament Craft," all day Dec. 2-3 and 9-10; "Color My Holiday World Adult Coloring," 7 p.m. Dec. 13; "Crafty Christmas," all day Dec. 21 and 22; and "Winter Break Movies," 2 p.m. daily Dec. 26-29. Children ages 3-6 are invited to "A Christmas Storytime" at 10:30 a.m. Dec. 2 at Grove City.
Westland Area Library will host "Ugly Sweater Week" Dec. 4-8 with crafts every day in the Youth Services department. Be sure to wear your ugliest holiday sweater.
