St. Charles Preparatory School senior Ian Smith, of Pickerington, recently was named a National Merit commended scholar for 2017-18 for placing among the top 5 percent of all students who took the Pre-Scholastic Aptitude/National Merit Qualifying Test in their junior year.
Smith is the son of Brian and Gaye Smith. He attended Pickerington Lakeview Junior High School and is a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish.
Smith is a co-captain of the St. Charles soccer team for which he has played four years. He is also a member of the engineering team, served on St. Charles Student Council and was president of the Borromean Chapter of the National Honor Society.
In addition, Smith has volunteered at Shepherd's Corner Farm, the Heinzerling Home for the disabled and went on a service mission to Portsmouth. He has also been a summer research intern in medical laboratories at the Ohio State University.
Commended scholars will not continue in competition for National Merit scholarships, but some are eligible for scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
