A Hilliard man is dead and a suspect is in custody after a shooting Thursday, Jan. 25, at a residence off U.S. Route 23 in Delaware.

Delaware police officers responded shortly before 7 p.m. Jan. 25 to reports of a shooting in the 900 block of Stratford Road. After they arrived, they discovered the body of Ali Al Azirjawi, 28, of Hilliard, according to a news release from the Delaware Police Department.

Azirjawi apparently suffered multiple gunshot wounds, the release states.

Officers took Bryan S. Pemberton, 33, of Stratford Road into custody at the scene without incident, according to the news release. Pemberton, who faces a charge of murder, is incarcerated at the Delaware County jail, the release states.

According to the Delaware Police Department, investigators believe the victim arrived at the residence for a child-custody exchange.

A woman who identified herself as the victim’s fiancee made the initial 911 call after the shooting. She told an emergency dispatcher the man who shot her fiancee is the father of one of her children.

An employee of a business in the 1100 block of Columbus Pike also placed a call to 911. He told a dispatcher a woman ran into the side door of the business and yelled that a man shot her fiance.

The employee said the shooting took place at a residence just east of the business off Stratford Road.

Pemberton was arraigned on a charge of murder, a first-degree felony, at 10 a.m. Jan. 26 in Delaware Municipal Court. A judge set Pemberton's bond at $5 million, according to municipal court records.
