In this March 21, 1969 photo, Columbus Mayor M.E. Sensenbrenner poses with Columbus East High School cheerleaders on the day the Tigers defeated Toledo Libbey in a Class AA basketball semifinal 64-63 in St. John Arena.

Sensenbrenner, who attended the game in an orange and black East sweatshirt, was the 44th mayor of Columbus. He was known for being a dynamic civic booster, but he did not enter politics until after he was 50.

He served as mayor twice, once from 1954 to 1959 and again from 1964 to 1971.

He died in 1991.

Sensenbrenner was the city's longest-serving mayor until Jan. 1, 2014, when Mayor Michael B. Coleman took that honor.

East won the state title a day later by defeating Canton McKinley 71-56.
