Grove City police said an investigation into a report of an apartment building being spray-painted led to a felony charge of receiving stolen property being filed against a Columbus man.
Officers were dispatched at 8:30 p.m. Jan. 20 to the 5000 block of Pineville Drive after a resident reported hearing the sound of someone spray painting the side of his apartment building. An officer who responded found letters in red paint had been sprayed on the building, reports stated.
Another officer responding to the scene noticed a man loading items into the trunk of a car on Hilldale Drive near City Place Drive. A short time later, the officer noticed that a trailer parked near a store in the 5900 block of Hoover Road had similar letters in red spray paint on its surface. He could smell fresh spray paint in the air, according to reports.
The officer checked the license plate of the car on Hilldale and found the car was registered to a Columbus woman.
Police contacted the woman, who was at an apartment in the 2600 block of Hilldale Drive. She said the man was with her, but he refused to speak with officers, who then headed to the apartment.
When they arrived, they observed the man leaving with an unopened can of beer in his pants pocket. Officers arrested him on a misdemeanor charge of underage possession of alcohol.
Officers searched the man and found a Georgia driver's license that they discovered was linked to a man with a different name from the one listed on the card but whose photo matched the picture, according to the report.
The man told police someone had left the license in his car and he had it in his pocket because he had not yet been able to return it. The man had red paint on his right hand and on the bottom of his shoes, reports stated.
While officers were talking to the man, a Columbus man called police to report his backpack had been stolen earlier that evening from his car parked in the 5900 block of City Place Drive. He said the backpack contained a cellphone, a tablet and credit cards.
The woman gave police permission to search her car, and officers found the backpack and its contents.
They also found a glass bowl containing burnt marijuana, reports stated.
The woman told police the bowl belonged to her. She was issued a summons to appear in mayor's court on a misdemeanor drug-paraphernalia charge, according to reports.
The male suspect, a 19-year-old Columbus man, was charged with a felony count of receiving stolen property and a misdemeanor count of vandalism, according to reports. He was taken to the Franklin County jail.
