Westerville officers chased a theft suspect unsuccessfully through the woods after residents reported seeing someone entering unlocked vehicles.

According to reports, a resident called police after witnessing someone opening cars and trailers in the 200 block of East Park Street after 2 a.m. Jan. 15.

When officers arrived, they reportedly tracked the suspect to a nearby street and chased the trail through a nature preserve and onto Kimothy Drive. Officers reportedly lost the trail and found minimal evidence.

One officer ripped his uniform "in several places" while tracking the suspect through the woods, reports stated.

Owners of multiple vehicles in the area informed police of missing items.

* A Westerville resident reported someone stole his vehicle while it warmed up in his driveway on the morning of Jan. 17.

According to reports, the man was letting the vehicle warm up at his residence in the 1100 block of Hooverview Road just after 11 a.m. When he returned moments later, the vehicle was gone.

Reports indicate police found a vehicle parked nearby that was listed as missing from Columbus. No security cameras were present at the Westerville house.

* A Westerville woman reported the tires of her vehicle were slashed while it sat outside her residence in the 100 block of Nottingham Court between Jan. 19 and 20.
