History is embedded in the walls at North High Brewing, 1288 N. High St., Columbus – literally.

From flooring that dates back to when the building was a Model T Ford dealer to window blinds that are made from old benches used in the Ohio State University’s stadium in 1922, North High Brewing owner Gavin Meyers took three months to renovate the building before opening the brewery in the Short North.

North High was the fifth stop on the #ThisWeekBreweryTour for ThisWeek staffers.

One piece of history comes from our lifetime, with a large displays of post office boxes from a post office destroyed during Hurricane Katrina, said brewer Sam Hickey. Now, the post office boxes serve as the home for their yearly mug club glasses.

In addition to the rich history within the taproom, the brewery is also known for their range of beers, from newcomers like the Belgian Whit which debuted three weeks ago, to their popular pale ale, known as THE Pale Ale.

“We call it THE Pale Ale because in 2016, we won a silver medal at the World Beer Cup for this recipe,” Hickey said. “We’re very proud of that.”

But expect something new whenever you walk into North High Brewing, Hickey said. The brewery creates many once-in-a-lifetime brews, such as “peanut butter and jelly.”

“People absolutely loved it, but we haven’t seen it back here on tap,” Hickey said.

If you’re looking for a hands-on experience while drinking beer, you can brew your own batch. Four kettles are available for customers to brew their beer, then come back at least three weeks later to bottle and label their finished creation.

ThisWeek Community News staffers chose to brew their own honey wheat lager, and we’ll be back at North High Brewing on March 8 to bottle our beer as well as release the name of our specialty brew. If you’d like to help name our beer, we’ve got polls up on Facebook.com/ThisWeekFoodandWine.
