In a photo taken Sept. 10, 1978, audition day attracted 370 Ohio State University students who had braved the heat, hoping to win a spot in the 192-member marching band.

The students spent about 12 hours outside Ohio Stadium, striding up and down the asphalt to the commands of the 32 student squad leaders, who chose the band members for the school year.

Those auditioning were judged on the basis of coordination, "snap" and posture, in addition to musical ability.
