Whitehall police arrested a 51-year-old Columbus man for felonious assault, a second-degree felony, after he allegedly shot another man at a Westphal Avenue residence March 23.

Police responded to a report of a shooting at a residence in the 800 block of Westphal Avenue at 12:05 a.m. March 23.

The victim, a Columbus man, told police he had been staying at the Westphal Avenue residence with a woman as he moved from one apartment to another.

The victim and the woman had a previous romantic relationship but are not currently involved, reports said. The woman's current boyfriend reportedly confronted the victim.

The suspect allegedly displayed a small, semiautomatic handgun and fired once, striking the victim in the shoulder, then fled from the residence, police said.

Officers found the suspect at a residence in northeast Columbus. Reports said he initially denied being at the Westphal Avenue residence but eventually told police the shooting victim produced the gun and, after a tussle, it was fired accidentally.

The suspect said he threw the gun down a sewer grate, but then said he gave it to another person, according to reports.

Eventually, the man told police he hid it in the bedroom of the woman's daughter, reports said. Police recovered the gun, according to reports.
