A Columbus firefighter was killed in an off-duty motorcycle accident last night, May 8, in downtown Columbus.

Derek Dalton, 32, of Pickerington was killed at 9:38 p.m. on East Long Street, near North 11th Street, according to a statement issued today by the Columbus Division of Fire.

The accident still is under investigation by the Columbus Division of Police, the statement said.

Walton joined the nearly four years ago and was assigned to Station 23 at Livingston Avenue and Hamilton Road.

“One of the things that stands out to me about Derek is that he was so excited about becoming a paramedic. He started his training on his own time at Grant (Medical Center) instead of waiting for the next Columbus fire class,” Assistant Chief James Cannell said in a statement. “He will be greatly missed.”

Walton grew up in Columbus and graduated from South High School Urban Academy in 2003. He served in the U.S. Army from 2004 to 2007.

He is survived by a fiancee and two sons, according to the fire division.

Funeral arrangements aren’t yet available.
