Eight new condominiums could be on their way to the intersection of Zion Drive and Sawmill Road.

Powell's planning and zoning commission June 13 unanimously approved the final development plan for the Mews at Zion, on 1.5 acres at the southeast corner of the intersection.

The plan still needs Powell City Council's nod.

The development is north of the Commons of Powell condominiums and southwest of the Junia Glen subdivision.

Four two-unit buildings would be constructed, with each home ranging in size from 2,000 to 2,400 square feet.

The three-bedroom condos primarily are "focused on retirees and empty nesters" and have first-floor master bedrooms and two-car garages, said Dave Pontia of New Albany-based Pontia Architecture.

The development is consistent with the city's comprehensive plan, officials said.

"We feel that this project is fitting the scale of the area and following up with what we've done with other in-fill type (properties) like this," said Dave Betz, Powell's development director.

Also at its June 13 meeting, the commission approved the plat for the third phase of the Verona subdivision on the site of the former Shamrock Golf Club.

The third phase will include the construction of an additional 25 homes, bringing the total development to 166 homes on 114 acres.

It also includes the construction of a road that will connect the subdivision to Seldom Seen Road.

Construction is expected to start later this year.
