Whitehall police arrested a 32-year-old Whitehall man for petty theft and criminal mischief, both misdemeanors, at 1:10 a.m. July 16 at a store in the 3600 block of East Main Street.

The man also was wanted on a felony warrant for receiving stolen property.

Police responded to the business shortly after 1 a.m. July 16 after a silent alarm was activated there, according to reports. Upon arriving, police saw no vehicles in the parking lot and observed no signs of forced entry.

Upon entering, police observed nothing "out of the ordinary" and were about to clear the scene when a man abruptly opened a door.

Police detained the man at gunpoint and learned from store employees that the alarm was activated in the "safe drop" area of the store.

While searching the man, police found a "large lump" in a pocket and discovered a large amount of cash inside that was overflowing into his jeans, reports said.

Police arrested the man, who reportedly said the money was the day's "drop." The man later told police, according to reports, that he was "struggling with his finances" and "behind on bills a few months."

The man had $653, according to reports. He was transported to the Franklin County jail.

* Police arrested a 27-year-old Columbus man for theft and robbery, a second-degree felony, at 12:45 p.m. July 16 in the 4300 block of East Broad Street.

Police responded to the business on a report of a man who attempted to steal merchandise and assaulted an employee.

The man purchased a fruit drink and when told it was $1.10, replied "I don't pay taxes" and gave the employee $1.

The employee took the drink and the man pushed her, according to reports, and threatened to assault her.

Employees pointed out the man to police after he had left the store and walked to an ATM at a nearby bank.

The man told police he attempted to purchase a drink but did not have enough money. After the man and the employee exchanged several drinks and money between them, the man went to the ATM.

While police still were there with the man, a bank employee informed police fraud was occurring.

He told police the man has submitted a false deposit slip and was trying to withdraw money.

The man was arrested and initially refused to provide police his identity.
