Whitehall police arrested a 20-year-old woman for robbery at 6:40 p.m. Aug. 21 at Premium Beverage, 4352 E. Broad St.

Police responded to the store, where employees reported the woman attempted to steal cigars, then assaulted an employee and ran into an adjacent store.

The store owner's husband told police the woman was caught stealing a box of cigars. When she was confronted, she punched the man in the face and ran away, reports said.

Two witnesses corroborated the victim's account of the incident, according to reports.

One described the woman's action as "wild" and that display stands were knocked down during the struggle; another said she interceded to prevent "any further harm" to the victim.

No video was obtained because the camera overseeing the area was inoperable, according to reports.

The suspect told police she frequently buys tobacco wrappings at the store, and after she questioned why the price had increased, the owner's husband began yelling at her. The woman told police he pushed her, grabbed her hair and threw her to the ground.

She told officers she assaulted him in self-defense and ran to another store, where she called police.

Based on the preponderance of evidence, police arrested the woman and transported her to the Franklin County jail.
