Gahanna's Friendship Park, 150 Oklahoma Ave., will be filled will all kinds of pies -- from deep dish to thin crust pizzas, and even caramel apple pie cupcakes -- during an inaugural event brought to residents by Visit Gahanna from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7.

Presented by G&J Pepsi, the first Pies in the Park will feature signature pies from Gahanna area pizza shops, including Jet's Pizza, Gatsby's, Coaches and MOD Pizza, selling samples and showing off their creations.

"We encourage attendees to sample the offerings and then vote for their favorite pizzas," said Laurie Jadwin, Visit Gahanna executive director.

Categories will include Best Crust, Best Sauce, Best Herbal Topping and People's Choice for overall favorite pizza.

Pizza isn't the only kind of pie that will be available, Jadwin said.

An assortment of food and beverage vendors will have their take on the theme, as well.

Adults can preview new Pumpkin Spice and Salted Caramel flavored whiskeys from Gahanna-based Noble Cut Distillery, while youngsters and adults can enjoy caramel apple pie cupcakes and a range of assorted pie-related goodies from Smallcakes Cupcakery and Creamery, 1249 N. Hamilton Road.

Kimm Boes, owner of Smallcakes, said she opened in June at Stoneridge Plaza.

"We're very excited," she said. "We have freshly made gourmet cupcakes, including pumpkin pie cupcakes and caramel apple pie cupcakes. People have been clamoring to get them."

Boes said Pies in the Park wanted some pie-themed desserts.

"We're happy to oblige," she said.

Gatsby's owner Doug Vance said his business would participate with its popular pepperoni pizza.

"We'll probably do a specialty of some sort, maybe a white sauce or ranch chicken," he said. "We do a traditional, thin crust pizza."

Gatsby's, 118 N. Hamilton Road, has been a Gahanna staple since 1977.

"As long as the weather holds out, it will be perfect," Vance said.

Jet's Pizza, 960 N. Hamilton Road, will offer its signature deep dish pizza.

"It's cut square," said Patrick Pierce, Jet's sales manager. "Our main pizza that everyone likes is the square, deep dish pizza. We'll will do a pepperoni, cheese and one of our specialty pizzas, probably barbecue chicken."

Pierce said he thinks it's fun to showcase Jet's pizza on a local level.

"I think it will be a fun deal," he added. "I hope there's a lot of community support."

Pies in the Park also will feature a variety of free family activities that will focus on outdoor fun, including face painting and a bounce castle.

The Ohio Herb Education Center will offer the chance to create-your-own herbal dipping oils for pizza, and lead an informative "Herb Walk" through the Park. Namaste in Love Yoga Studio will offer yoga demonstrations for adults and children. Also planned is live music.

A big-screen television will be on hand, featuring the Cleveland Browns against the Oakland Raiders.

"Bring your chairs and your entire family for an afternoon of cheap fall family fun in one of Gahanna's most picturesque parks," Jadwin said.

The event is free and open to the public.

Tickets for food vendors can be purchased for $1.50 per ticket, and each vendor will determine how many tickets they will charge for their food items.
