In this photo taken at a Columbus Day gala in October 1979, roller skaters "braved a blustery Broad Street" in downtown Columbus.

Several hundred took part despite chilling fall temperatures on a Sunday, donning wheels and skating along a cordoned stretch of Broad Street across from the Ohio Statehouse.

The free skating session was one of several Columbus Day activities held downtown, including a two-hour parade, a concert and a 14.92-km Columbus Day Run (to commemorate the year 1492) that actually was shortened by about a half-mile because of a misdirected route.
