Whitehall police reported the city’s first homicide of the year occurred Nov. 21 in the parking lot of V-Tech Auto Service, 4257 E. Main St.

Police reported 47-year-old Mulugeta Gemeraw Shiferaw, of Heather Bridge Lane in Blacklick, died at the scene of the shooting.

Shiferaw was believed to have been employed at the shop, Deputy Chief Tracy Sharpless said.

Whitehall police began receiving the first of multiple reports of gunshots in the area of East Main Street and Elaine Road at 4:36 p.m. Nov. 21, Sgt. John Grebb said.

Callers reported a man later identified as Shiferaw had been shot and was lying in a parking lot at 4572 E. Main St.

Witnesses described a man running from the scene but gave varying descriptions of his clothing, Grebb said.

The suspect might have fled in a silver car, possibly a Toyota Corolla, Grebb said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Whitehall Division of Police at 614-237-6333.

The slaying is the first in Whitehall since April 2016.
