The New Albany High School boys tennis team is heading back to the Ohio Tennis Coaches Association Division I state tournament.

The Eagles swept the three singles courts against visiting Upper Arlington to defeat the Golden Bears 3-2 in the district final May 23.

In singles, Robert Cash defeated Jack Zelezny 6-3, 6-3, Nathan Jose beat Josh Cole 6-2, 6-3 and Graeme Green shut out Elliot Jones 6-0, 6-0.

UA won both doubles matches. Jack Hughes and Nathan Yu beat Alex Cash and Chris Mathes 6-2, 6-1 and Will Reynolds and Jack Schadek edged Alek Jacoby and Ben Yan 7-5, 6-3.

The Eagles improved to 14-2 and will play Toledo St. John’s in a state semifinal May 28 at Reynoldsburg. The winner will face Cincinnati Sycamore, Hunting Valley University School, Mason or Solon in the state final later that day.

New Albany finished third in the OTCA state tournament last year.

UA fell to 12-5.

“We’re not going to overlook UA and think about the state tournament,” Eagles coach Marc Thomas said before the match. “It’ll take a great day for us to beat them. A district championship has been one of our top goals all season.”
