Beginning this fall, the first four rounds of the state high school football playoffs for all seven divisions will be played on Friday nights.

The state finals will continue to be held over three days.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association board of directors voted 9-0 on June 1 in favor of moving all playoff games to Fridays for the three rounds of regional playoffs and the state semifinal round.

The OHSAA is expected to release more details June 6.

Previously, playoff games were split between Fridays and Saturdays during the first four rounds, but OHSAA commissioner Dan Ross said in May that Saturday playoff games have had lower attendance.

In addition, there have been fewer schools willing to host neutral-site playoff games on Saturdays in recent years.

According to Ross, the popularity of college football was among the key contributors in those factors.

The state championship games for all seven divisions will be held in Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton the next two years.
