The Lakewood High School softball team has been one of Ohio’s most prestigious programs this century, and it added to its state championship total June 3.
The Lancers got a two-run home run by Brenna Brownfield in the third inning and pitcher Courtney Vierstra made it stand in a 2-1 victory over Akron Hoban in the Division II state final at Firestone Stadium in Akron.
The Lancers, who finished 32-1, won their second consecutive state title and their fifth championship since 2008.
The Knights finished 24-3.
Alexa Perry opened the bottom of the third inning for Lakewood with a triple. After Hoban pitcher Laney Jones got Megan Davis to line out, Brownfield homered to left to make it 2-0.
Hoban scored its only run in the top of the fourth. Alex Whitmore was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a single by Jones and went to third on an error before scoring an unearned run on a single by Chloe Weidrick.
Also in the inning, Weidrick stole second, but Vierstra struck out Ashley Matousek for the second out, and Jessica Knisley was called for batter’s interference on a bunt attempt for the third out.
Vierstra gave up just four hits and walked none while striking out seven as she earned the pitching victory in a state final for the second year in a row.
