Upper Arlington High School and ball diamonds have been two constants throughout Terry Streng’s life, and Streng has been reunited with both.

Streng, a 1969 UA graduate who played baseball at Ohio State for four years after that, recently was named the Golden Bears’ new softball coach.

Streng, who replaces Brandon Twiss, was an assistant under former softball coach Todd DelBoccio in 2008 and 2009. According to Streng, next softball season will be his 64th as a head coach between stints coaching baseball, boys basketball, boys golf and girls volleyball at UA, Columbus East and Northland.

“I just wanted to coach again. I have never lost the passion and desire to coach,” said Streng, whose son, 2009 UA graduate Matt Streng, also played baseball at OSU. “It’s the same game (as baseball), just a different-sized ball.”

Twiss was 22-28 in two seasons.

UA was 9-14 overall and 3-7 in the OCC-Central Division last year, losing to Hilliard Bradley 8-1 in the second round of the Division I district tournament. Many of the Bears’ key players are expected to return, including first-team all-league and second-team all-district selection Gigi Danes (SS) and second-team all-league honorees Molly Schweitzer (3B) and Amanda Ventresca (1B).

“What I’ve seen so far is quite a bit of talent ready to be developed,” coach Streng said. “I have a positive outlook for this team and the talent to go along with it.”

Streng is the second UA coach hired this summer. In June, Lia Snell was named girls crew coach.

Snell replaced Amanda Jones, who coached on an interim basis last spring after five-year coach Michael Rice stepped down. Snell previously coached with the Dublin and Toledo St. Ursula Academy rowing clubs.
