When it comes to rushing numbers, no Ohio high school football player can top the yardage gained by Harvest Prep’s Daniel Bangura the last two seasons.
Yet, what Bangura accomplished Sept. 1 against Franklin Heights was jaw-dropping even for him, as he rushed for 470 yards and five touchdowns on 37 carries to lead a 44-14 win.
It was the 13th time in Ohio history that a player rushed for at least 470 yards in a game, according to OHSAA records.
The performance earned Bangura our Player of the Week honor in a close vote over Pickerington North linebacker Nick Giardina, who won our Twitter poll with 54 percent of 1,148 votes. Giardina had 19 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss and two sacks in a 35-0 win over Dublin Jerome on Sept. 1.
Last season, Bangura set state records for yards rushing (4,128), total touchdowns (57), rushing touchdowns (54) and points (348) while helping Harvest Prep reach a Division VII state semifinal.
