The losing record the Wellington School girls soccer team endured in its first season under coach Lindsey Smith wasn't without its benefits.

Although the Jaguars lost leading scorer Emma Ruck (17 goals, 9 assists) to graduation, she was one of only four seniors a year ago.

The experience the team gained last season has paid off thus far, as Wellington was 4-0 before playing Zanesville Rosecrans on Sept. 6.

The Jaguars are competing in the MSL-Ohio Division this season after previously being an independent. They opened league play with a 5-0 victory over London on Aug. 30.

Wellington also has beaten Tree of Life (10-0 on Aug. 19), Teays Valley (6-0 on Aug. 21) and Fisher Catholic (7-1 on Aug. 28).

"It's been pretty smooth so far," said Smith, whose team went 5-13 last fall. "They've been working really hard and really care about each other. We have five seniors that are our backbone."

Through four games, senior forward Jakaysha Williams had 10 goals and five assists, and senior center midfielder Olivia Penegor had two goals and four assists.

Penegor is new to the program but has extensive club experience.

The other seniors are Zoe Beatty (midfielder), Lizzy Chester (defender) and Jacquie Sierzputowski (defender).

Juniors Mackenzie Beam (outside back), Anastasia Dorenbusch (midfielder), Chloe Locker (midfielder) and Catherine Zallanta (center back) all are starters. Zallanta had seven goals and one assist and Locker had four goals and two assists through four games.

Sophomore Eli Burkhart and freshman Angelina Grohovsky are at goalkeeper, and Burkhart has two goals and one assist when she's not been in goal.

Sophomore midfielder Anna Chester has been with the team early this season but is expected to study abroad later this month.

Also on the team are freshmen Caroline Cooke (forward), Christine Cooke (center forward/center midfielder) and Reagan Kadlic (for-ward/outside back).

"We've got 22 players overall, so we'll have five to six (junior varsity) games, and that's not something we've been able to do in the past," Smith said.

"It gives us an opportunity to get some other players time. We lost (13 games) last season but eight or nine of them were by two goals or less. We've used that as motivation."

Girls golf coach
pleased with start

After having only two or sometimes three competitors in most matches last season, the girls golf team has four players this year. That's the minimum necessary to record a team score.

Juniors Veronica Poster and Ella Sweitzer and sophomore Lexi Horan are returning players.

They've been joined by senior Allison Sprochi, who played in her first two prep seasons.

"We're off to a great start," coach Bill Miller said. "We've got great girls."

The Jaguars are competing in the Mid-Ohio Girls Golf League and the MSL-Ohio.

"The girls are getting better and they're playing as a team," Miller said.

"Working through the ups and downs is very important."

Boys soccer team
to face Eagles

The boys soccer team will face one of the area's stronger Division III programs Monday, Sept. 11, when they visit Grove City Christian for an MSL-Cardinal game.

With a 1-0 loss to Dayton Christian on Sept. 2, the Jaguars dropped to 2-1-1 overall. Wellington beat Rosecrans 1-0 in its league opener Aug. 31 and continued league play Sept. 6 against Harvest Prep.

Grove City Christian, which was 11-6-1 and a district semifinalist last season, was 3-0-1 overall before playing Tree of Life on Sept. 5.

It is 1-0 in the league heading into its game Saturday, Sept. 9, against Harvest Prep.

Through three games for Wellington, Eli Dulle had three goals and two assists and Ahmet Ozer, Katz Kadlic and Jordan Livits all had one goal. Josh Wooddell had made 10 saves in goal.
