Sweeping its chief rivals has been the highlight of the season for the Westerville Central High School girls tennis team.
The Warhawks defeated Westerville South 5-0 on Sept. 7 and Westerville North 4-1 on Aug. 24.
"That's an appropriate goal, to do well against North and South," coach Donovon Barrett said. "It's like any other sport, (the athletes) know each other. A lot of them went to elementary, maybe even middle school together. It's a friendly rivalry."
Against South, winners were Levi Burks 6-0, 6-0 at first singles, Shayla Ta 6-0, 6-0 at second singles, Nikita Nair 6-1, 6-0 at third singles, Carley Weiler and Haley Prue by default at first doubles and Priya Bhattal and Vivian Baker 6-3, 6-2 at second doubles.
Central was 3-5 overall before playing Hilliard Darby on Sept. 12 and finished 2-3 in the OCC-Buckeye Division.
"There really haven't been any surprises," Barrett said. "We've had some ups and downs, but we've really been on a steady climb in the last couple of weeks with our competitiveness and our willingness to fight in the match even when the prospects looked a little grim."
The Warhawks are preparing for a Division I sectional tournament Oct. 5 and 7.
