With no seniors in his program, Ready High School girls tennis coach Dan Skuce has been most interested in seeing growth and improvement from a young squad this fall.
The Silver Knights have six freshmen and five sophomores who are gaining experience alongside junior Eva Freeman, who has split time between first and second singles, and junior Lucia Beickman, who is mostly playing doubles.
"It's a fun team," Skuce said. "I like the fact I have girls interested in playing tennis and even though it's the first time that many of them have played, they're all going to be with me (for) three years (or) four years."
Ready was 1-8 overall after losing to Hamilton Township 4-1 on Sept. 18 and 0-3 in the CCL before playing Columbus School for Girls on Sept. 19 in its league finale.
The Knights defeated Franklin Heights 4-1 on Aug. 30.
In a 4-1 loss to Grandview on Sept. 7, Freeman won at second singles and sophomore Emily Mathew lost in three sets at third singles.
Mathew won a match in three sets against Bloom-Carroll during a 4-1 loss Sept. 5.
Sophomores Lindsay Dickerson and Mary Zerrien and freshmen Claire Nagy and Jenna Ruth have been other key players.
Football team preps
for Liberty Union
For the first time in nearly a decade, the football team will face Liberty Union on Friday, Sept. 22, as it continues a slate that includes games against all six teams in the MSL-Ohio Division.
The last time the programs met was in 2008 during the Division V, Region 19 championship game, with the Lions winning 13-3.
Both teams were 3-1 after Ready beat Grandview 24-22 and Liberty Union defeated Bexley 41-7 on Sept. 15.
In the Knights' 27-6 win over Centerburg on Sept. 8, Jack Foley rushed 26 times for 124 yards and one touchdown.
Quarterback Austin Aiello completed eight of 20 passes for 108 yards and one touchdown and rushed for 59 yards on seven carries.
Three dropped passes played a role in hindering the passing game, according to coach Brian Cross.
"Overall we want our passing game to get better and have a higher completion rate," Cross said.
Liberty Union, which is in Region 19 with Ready this fall after the Knights moved up from Division VI, bounced back from a 7-0 loss to Bloom-Carroll on Sept. 1 by beating Amanda-Clearcreek 35-31 on Sept. 8.
Senior wide receiver Cole Peardon had five receptions for 133 yards, including a 56-yard touchdown that proved to be the game-winner, and rushed for 83 yards and three scores.
Senior running Chaise Wohrer rushed for 128 yards and junior quarterback Caleb Shook was 15-for-19 passing for 248 yards.
focuses on 'process'
The girls volleyball team is making adjustments as it heads into the final month of the regular season.
"The start of the season has been focusing on the process, not the outcome," coach Mike Kusan said. "We've been playing against bigger schools that have some of the best players in the state. We're working on (having) better ball control, aggressive serving and getting stops on defense. We're implementing a new lineup to produce more firepower for our offense."
The Knights were 7-7 overall and 0-5 in the CCL before playing DeSales on Sept. 19.
According to Kusan, Brenna Forrest, Jaide Lehnert, Lauren Whitt and Hannah Williams have led the offense, with Jordan Kusan steadying the attack at setter.
Bella Illig and Bella Hoersten have led the defense.
"I believe the beginning of the season should help prepare your team for the tournament run at the end of the season," coach Kusan said. "We've already traveled three times over an hour away so we can be ready when the tournament starts."
