Devin Dukes’ performance Sept. 22 helped the Grove City High School football team snap a 16-game losing streak.

It also earned him our Player of the Week honor. While Pickerington North’s Tyrik Carter edged Dukes in our Twitter poll, which received 1,947 votes in 24 hours, Dukes edged Gahanna’s Mike Lowery in the overall vote, which includes members of the ThisWeek sports staff.

The fan vote represents one vote, and each member of the staff also gets a vote.

Dukes rushed for 216 yards and three second-half touchdowns as the Dawgs defeated coach Tennyson Varney’s former team, Franklin Heights, 55-23. The senior’s touchdowns covered 9, 39 and 25 yards.

Grove City hadn’t won since Oct. 16, 2015, when it beat Gahanna 10-7.

Varney spent the past three seasons at Franklin Heights.

Dukes is a transfer from Ready, where he was Division VI district Offensive Player of the Year last season.
