The Olentangy Orange High School girls golf team defended its Division I district championship Oct. 10 at Cooks Creek and now will look to defend its state title Oct. 20 and 21 at Ohio State’s Gray Course.
The Pioneers shot 304 to win their second consecutive district championship ahead of runner-up Dublin Jerome (307) in the nine-team event. The top two teams and the top two individuals not on qualifying teams advanced to state.
Orange’s Ashley Au and Gahanna’s Kayla Davis both shot 71 to share medalist honors, while New Albany’s Madison Spiess (72) was the other individual qualifier.
Riley Dean (73) was next for Orange, followed by Alyssa Kim (76), Natalia Sompolvorachai (83) and Emily Fisher (85).
“I feel like district is always the tough one because you know it’s only two teams getting through (to state) and, if you screw up on this one day, that could be it for the season,” Pioneers coach Cari DiAngelis said. “At state, the pressure lifts a little. Since we have been there two times now, I think they will go in and play their game.”
Upper Arlington (311) finished third at district and Olentangy Liberty (315) was fourth.
Abby Kiefer led Jerome with a 73, followed by Taby Robinson (74), Meaghan Yant (78), Caitlin Yant (82) and Ash Abhang (83).
“It’s bittersweet because Liberty and UA are probably two of the top five teams in the state and they won’t be (at state),” said Celtics coach C.D. Butcher, whose team finished fifth at state last year. “We always want to put ourselves in position to go to state on the back nine and we were 2-over (par) on the back nine, so that helped us.”
