Cassie Alcala became the Pickerington High School North girls tennis team’s first Division I state qualifier last year, and on Oct. 14 the sophomore became the Panthers’ first district champion.

Alcala defeated Centennial’s Zoey Weil 4-6, 6-1, retired in the district final in singles at Upper Arlington, completing a 4-0 run through the tournament.

Watterson’s Claire Ghidotti edged Olentangy’s Kathleen Jones 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 in the third-place match.

The top four finishers in singles and doubles advanced to state Oct. 20 and 21 at Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.

In the semifinals, Alcala defeated Ghidotti 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 and Weil beat Jones 6-3, 6-1.

In doubles, Olentangy Liberty’s Maddi Atway and Dani Schoenly beat UA’s Ella Hazelbaker and Noah Mizer 6-0, 6-2 in the district final, and Liberty’s Cellini Ko and Lexi Steer defeated UA’s Evelyn Holman and Wendy Shi 6-0, 6-3 in the third-place match.

Atway and Schoenly swept Holman 6-2, 6-2 in one semifinal, while Hazelbaker and Mizer defeated Ko and Steer 6-4, 1-6, 6-1 in the other.

Division II

Academy sweeps district titles

Columbus Academy swept the area’s Division II state berths in singles and doubles.

Freshman Sydni Ratliff won the district championship in singles Oct. 14 at UA, defeating Wellington’s Akua Antwi-Woods 6-0, 6-0 in the final, and the Vikings’ Georgia Tuckerman and Himaja Reddy won the district title in doubles, beating teammates Lexis Hughes and Maddie Tuckerman 6-4, 6-1 in the final.

Unlike in Division I, only the district champions in singles and doubles qualified for state in Division II.
