Needing a win to keep its Division III, Region 11 playoff hopes alive, the host DeSales High School football team was tasked with the fourth-ranked team in Division II on Oct. 20.

Cincinnati Winton Woods has been battling for a home playoff spot in Region 8, and it lived up to its billing on the defensive end in a 42-7 victory.

The Stallions were limited to 90 yards of offense and couldn’t dig out of an early hole as they fell to 5-4. The Warriors improved to 8-1.

“We just wanted to have energy on both sides of the ball,” DeSales senior linebacker Jack DeSantis said. “Overall, we tried our best.”

Winton Woods made it 7-0 on a 43-yard pass from Kenny Mayberry to Cornell Beachem with 7 minutes, 38 seconds left in the first quarter, then took a 14-0 lead on a 13-yard pass from Mayberry to Beachem with 2:17 to go in the period.

After a DeSales turnover gave Winton Woods the ball at its own 41 with 8:45 left in the second quarter, Beachem scored on a 57-yard run two plays later for a 21-0 lead.

The Stallions’ Ty Van Fossen stopped Beachem for no gain on fourth-and-2 from the Warriors’ 33 with 4:24 left in the first half, and DeSales capitalized for its only touchdown.

With 19 seconds to go in the second period, quarterback Cole Silvestri ran for a 2-yard touchdown to make it 21-7.

The momentum didn’t last long, though, as Winton Woods scored on its opening possession of the second half when Mayberry hit Navar Gannaway for an 11-yard touchdown.

Raequan Prince added a 68-yard touchdown reception and a 65-yard scoring run for the Warriors to complete the scoring.

Brian Asamoah rushed for 59 yards on 23 carries and Van Fossen had nine tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss to lead the Stallions.

DeSales was limited to 7 yards passing.

“Big plays obviously hurt us,” Stallions coach Ryan Wiggins said. “We wanted to try to keep them off the field, but to beat a really good team, you’ve got to play a clean game.”
