The Olentangy Orange High School girls golf team took the first step toward repeating its Division I state championship, grabbing a four-stroke lead Oct. 20 at Ohio State’s Gray Course.

The two-day tournament concludes Oct. 21 on the same course.

The Pioneers shot a 305, putting them ahead of Toledo St. Ursula (309), Centerville (310), Dublin Jerome (313), Cincinnati Ursuline (327), Ashland (333), Liberty Township Lakota East (333), North Canton Hoover (338), Rocky River Magnificat (343), Solon (345), Shaker Heights Hathaway Brown (348) and Dover (366).

“That was a great score for the first day because of the nerves and the jitters that usually come along with that,” Orange coach Cari DeAngelis said. “The scores usually aren’t as low on the first day as they are in other tournaments.”

Ashley Au (73) led Orange and was tied for fifth overall behind leader Katie Hallinan (68) of Cincinnati Walnut Hills.

Natalia Sompolvorachai (76) was next for the Pioneers, followed by Riley Dean (78), Alyssa Kim (78) and Emily Fisher (83).

Taby Robinson (75) led Jerome, followed by Abby Kiefer (76), Ash Abhang (82), Meaghan Yant (82) and Caitlin Yant (84).

Also on the first day, New Albany’s Madison Spiess shot a 75 and Gahanna’s Kayla Davis had an 81.
