The Whitehall-Yearling High School football team set up a showdown with London in its regular-season finale with a 32-2 win over Ready on Oct. 20 at home.

The Rams, who improved to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the MSL-Ohio Division, can earn a share of the league title against London on Oct. 27. The Red Raiders improved to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the league with a 38-0 win over Bexley on Oct. 20.

The Rams also kept their Division II, Region 7 postseason hopes alive as they entered the game 13th in the computer ratings. The top eight teams in each region qualify for the playoffs.

“With Ready coming off that win last week against London (27-23), we knew we had our hands full,” Whitehall coach Rod Lightfoot said. “Our kids were determined to come out tonight and execute on both sides of the ball. Hats off to our defense because they did a tremendous job against a very dynamic offense that coach (Brian) Cross runs over there.”

Whitehall took control early by scoring on its first three possessions for an 18-0 lead.

The Rams held a 156-5 advantage in total yards after the first quarter and led 24-0 at halftime against the Silver Knights, who fell to 6-3 overall.

Quarterback Raymell Byrd led Whitehall, passing for 109 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for 105 yards. O.C. Wellman had touchdown catches of 25 and 80 yards.

Ready’s only points came midway through the third quarter when Whitehall’s Christian Gordon was trapped in the end zone on a punt return for a safety.

Gordon had a 17-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and added a 76-yard punt return for a score in the third quarter.

Jack Foley had 63 yards rushing on 13 carries to lead Ready, which finished with 146 total yards and gave up 294 yards to the Rams.

“We didn’t make it a game tonight,” Cross said. “They came ready to play. They played physical and tough, and they were better than us for sure tonight. A good football team.”
